Running Home: A Journey to End Violence

On July 1st 2012 Mexican-Canadian Ultra runner Norma Bastidas will set out to run from her current home in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada to the Cathedral in Mazatlan Sinaloa Mexico her birth city.

An over 2500 miles (4100 kilometers) journey to raise awareness about violence in our homes, in our streets, in our countries titled Running Home, A Journey to End Violence. Norma Bastidas plans on running  50 miles a day for about 51 days.

In 2009 Norma Bastidas became the fastest female in history to run seven of the planet’s most unforgiving environments on seven separate continents in seven months. Norma run through the thick jungles of Brazil and the driest deserts in the world including Antarctica all in support of the blind and visually impaired. She is also currently climbing the highest peak on each continent with 4 peaks remaining.

Her efforts have garnered the attention of Oprah Winfrey. Bastidas was featured in an Oprah Winfrey  Network (OWN) documentary hosted by actress Julia Roberts called “Extraordinary Moms,” alongside U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and award-winning journalist Christiane Amanpour.

On March 14, 2012 Norma will be in Modesto in preparation for her running of the Modesto Marathon.  During her stay in Modesto, .Norma will be a special guest of the Teens Run Modesto Program. Norma will speak to our TRM Students and VIPS Marathon Training Group about overcoming seemingly unsurmountable obstacles and not giving up on your goals. Norma will run the Modesto Marathon with our TRM students on 3/18/2012, prior to returning to Vancouver to resume her training for her journey home.
